Sellers - Moving Checklist

  • Get estimate from moving companies, arrange valuation and insurance for the move, arrange method of payment and create a moving file where you will be able to easily keep and find all documentation related to your move.
  • Arrange for cancellation of household insurance on your present property; arrange for property insurance on your new home.
  • Notify the Post Office and arrange forwarding of mail at least 10 days prior to moving.
  • Send change of address notices to: friends, relatives, credit card companies, newspapers, magazines, charge accounts, home services, and clubs or associations at least 10 days before your moving date.
  • Cancel pre-authorized payments for contracted services.
  • Change the address of driver’s licence and owner’s permit for the day of move, automated kiosks can be handy for this.
  • Arrange for transfer of medical, dental, prescription and optical records.
  • Arrange for transfer of school records.
  • If you have a pet ask for veterinary records to be transferred.
  • Cancel or transfer social, athletic, civic, religious, or business affiliations and memberships.
  • Notify service companies such as: cleaning service, window cleaners, gardeners, furnace maintenance, pool maintenance and snow removal.
  • Arrange for work to be done at your new home.
  • Arrange for final reading of gas and electric meters on the day you leave and forward the bills to your new address.
  • Arrange for connection of utilities a the new address.
  • Check and clear tax assessments on your current property.
  • Collect items from cleaning, repair or storage – fur coats, laundry, dry cleaning, watches, shoes , or small appliances.
  • Sell, give away or discard unwanted items.
  • If you are moving into or out of an apartment then make arrangements for the elevator prior to your move.
  • Leave a note in the place you are leaving with a forwarding address and phone number so that the new owners can notify you if any mail gets misdirected.
  • Plan your meals so that the fridge and cupboards will be empty on moving day.
